Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery
Overview
The MFDS exam is an internationally recognized dental qualification. It demonstrates completion of foundation/basic postgraduate dental training. The exam is bi-collegiate and organized jointly by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
MFDS Exam:
The MFDS (Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery) exam is an internationally recognized qualification for dentists, which consists of two parts: Part 1 is a written exam, and Part 2 is a practical, clinical skills assessment. Administered by the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh, England, and Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, the exam is designed to demonstrate a dentist’s knowledge and competence after completing basic postgraduate training and can lead to membership in one of the colleges.

MFDS Part 1:
A written exam designed to test the range of knowledge and understanding that forms the basis of direct patient care. Consists of 180 multiple-choice questions (single best answer type) and lasts three hours. Covers attributes such as problem-solving, evidence evaluation, critical reading, up-to-date knowledge, and patient management.
MFDS Part 2 (osce)
A practical exam evaluating reporting skills. Candidates interpret radiological images and provide accurate reports. Includes both oral examinations and rapid reporting sessions.
Note: The MFDS qualification is undergoing changes in 2026 and 2027 as the three UK Royal Colleges introduce a new unified MFDS examination. The new exam format will be set at a higher standard, so candidates should check the specific requirements and timelines on the relevant Royal College websites if they plan to take the exam during this transition period.
Eligibility and Recognition:
Qualified dental surgeons of good professional standing, eligible to practice in the country where they gained their degree, are eligible for the exam. Fellowship is awarded by examination, and successful candidates can use the letters MFDS after their name.
